Melasma

What Is Melasma
Melasma is a common skin condition characterised by the development of brown or greyish-brown patches on the skin, primarily on the face. These patches are usually found on the cheeks, forehead, nose, and upper lip, and they can also appear on other sun-exposed areas of the body.
Melasma is more common in women than in men, with an onset typically between the ages of 20 and 50 years. Melasma is most common in people who tan easily or have naturally brown skin. It is also common among pregnant women.

What Causes Melasma
The exact cause of melasma is not fully understood, but it is believed to be related to several factors, including hormonal changes, sun exposure, and genetic predisposition.
Hormonal changes during pregnancy, known as the "mask of pregnancy" or chloasma, and the use of birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy can trigger melasma. Ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun stimulates the production of melanin, which can exacerbate the condition. Additionally, certain medications and skincare products may also contribute to melasma.
