Fine Lines and Wrinkles

What Are Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Fine lines and wrinkles are visible creases and folds that form on the skin, often as a result of the natural ageing process. Fine lines are typically shallow and develop first, appearing around the eyes, mouth, and forehead. Wrinkles are deeper and more pronounced, often becoming more noticeable with age.

What Causes Fine Lines & Wrinkles

Fine lines and wrinkles are caused by a combination of intrinsic and extrinsic factors:

  • Intrinsic Ageing: This is the natural ageing process that occurs over time. As we age, the production of collagen and elastin in the skin decreases, leading to a loss of elasticity and firmness. Additionally, the skin’s ability to retain moisture diminishes, resulting in dryness and the formation of fine lines.
  • Extrinsic Ageing: External factors such as prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light, smoking, pollution, and repetitive facial expressions can accelerate the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. UV light, in particular, breaks down collagen and elastin fibres in the skin, while smoking reduces blood flow to the skin, depriving it of essential nutrients and oxygen.

Types of Fine Lines & Wrinkles

There are several types of fine lines and wrinkles, each with distinct characteristics:

  • Dynamic Wrinkles: These wrinkles are caused by repeated facial movements such as smiling, frowning, or squinting. Common examples include crow’s feet around the eyes and frown lines on the forehead.
  • Static Wrinkles: These wrinkles are visible even when the face is at rest. They result from a loss of skin elasticity and are often due to intrinsic ageing and prolonged exposure to extrinsic factors like UV radiation. Examples include nasolabial folds (lines running from the nose to the mouth) and marionette lines (lines running from the corners of the mouth to the chin).
  • Gravity Wrinkles: These wrinkles develop as a result of the skin’s natural tendency to sag with age. They are often seen in areas such as the cheeks, jowls, and neck.
  • Sleep Wrinkles: These are formed from the pressure exerted on the skin during sleep, often appearing on the sides of the face and chest. They tend to become more pronounced over time, especially in people who sleep on their side or stomach.
